FRENCH Antique ST. ETIENNE ARSENAL 11mm Model 1873 6-Shot MILITARY Revolver
Mid 1870s CHAMELOT-DELVIGNE Double Action Revolver
Here we present an antique French Model 1873 Chamelot-Delvigne Double Action Service Revolver, produced by Manufacture d’armes de Saint-Étienne, which was the French State Arsenal in St. Etienne, France, circa 1879 with a production run from 1873 through 1887 with over 337,000 examples produced.
The Chamelot-Delvigne 11mm Model 1873 was adopted by the French army as a service revolver for non-commissioned officers and was the first center fire cartridge revolver adopted by the French Army. It has a solid frame with side ejection and a double action mechanism. Although replaced by the Model 1892 revolver, it was still widely used during the First World War and issued to French reserve units in all the way up until 1940. The French Resistance made widespread use of it during the German Occupation of France during World War II.
Interestingly, the St. Etienne Arsenal produced arms such as swords from medieval times up until 1764 when it became a primary French firearms production facility. It produced arms all the way through the World Wars and finally closed in 2001.
