Product Description

FORT CUSTER MONTANA Antique  Springfield M1884 TRAPDOOR Carbine .45-70 GOVT

2nd Cavalry Company A

Here we present an antique U.S. Springfield Model 1884 Trapdoor Carbine, manufactured by the Springfield Armory. This carbine was manufactured in 1886, around the end of the Indian Wars and just four years before the Wounded Knee massacre. This is one of 6,000 carbines made that year. As with other changes and upgrades the new model marking was applied after existing stocks of 1873 marked breech blocks were used up, thus early production Model 1884 rifles produced in 1886 and early 1887 usually have 1873 marked breech blocks, as is this example.

This carbine has been inscribed “1879 / JIM FLINT CPL. / 2ND CAV. A. / FORT CUSTER MONTA.” on the right of the buttstock. Fort Custer was established during the Indian wars in the Department of Dakota by the U.S. Army to subjugate in Sioux, Cheyenne, and Crow Indians near present-day Hardin, Montana. The post was established in 1877 and named for General George Armstrong Custer who died at the Battle of the Little Big Horn, and was manned by the 2nd Cavalry, 11th Infantry, 1st Cavalry, 10th Cavalry, and 25th Infantry before it ceased to be used in 1898. The fort supplied troops for some of the Plains campaigns, including the Bannock War. It was from Fort Custer that Captain George K. Sanderson, Company C, Eleventh Infantry, was sent to the Custer battlefield to police and rebury any exposed remains in April 1879. Then on January 28, 1881, Lieutenant Charles F. Roe and Troop M, Second Cavalry, left Fort Custer for the battlefield on the Little Big Horn River, in charge of the materials for the monument to be erected to the officers and men who fell in that action.

The overall condition is good. Weathered patina. The action is excellent. The bore is bright with good rifling. The stock has a good SWP cartouche and the circle “P” on the grip; the stock has been repaired around the wrist.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 22 inches.

Caliber: .45-70 GOVT
