FINE New Departure SMITH & WESSON .38 Safety Hammerless C&R LEMON SQUEEZER
5th Model S&W SELF DEFENSE Hammerless Revolver
Here we present a C&R Smith & Wesson 5th Model .38 Double Action Safety Hammerless Revolver, made circa 1908 with a production run between 1907-1940 in Springfield, Massachusetts. Over the 33-year production run for the 5th model, roughly 41,500 were manufactured within a serial number range of 220,001 through 261,493. The Smith & Wesson Safety Hammerless models were produced from 1887 (1888 for the 32) to just before World War II. They were chambered in either .32 S&W or .38 S&W with a five-shot cylinder. They were most often produced with a 2-inch, 3-inch, 3.5-inch, or 4-inch barrel. But some 6″ barreled versions are known to exist.
This revolver was made to be a simple, compact and reliable firearm that one could carry in a pocket or a holster around the turn of the 20th Century. This revolver features an internal hammer design to remove risk of snagging or stopping the action. There is a grip safety built into the back of the grip frame. The frame is a top-break design that activates the automatic ejector. These are very nice features from the turn of the 20th Century!
The overall condition is fine. Original nickel finish has been preserved. Excellent action. The bore is in good shape with a nice shimmer and serviceable rifling. The right grip has a large crack, and both grips are missing chips from the butt. Numbers match. Markings are legible.
