FACTORY LETTERED & ENGRAVED Antique COLT NEW LINE .22 RF POCKET Revolver
SELF DEFENSE Revolver w/NICKEL FINISH & PEARL GRIPS
Here we present an antique Factory Lettered and Engraved Colt New Line .22 Revolver, made in Hartford, Connecticut. The included factory letter confirms the caliber, barrel length, and the finish, as well as shipment to J.S. Hyde on October 27, 1891.
The New Line was a single action pocket revolver introduced by the Colt’s Patent Fire Arms Manufacturing Company in 1873 and continued through 1884, with the .22 caliber being manufactured between 1873 and 1877 with a total of roughly 55,343 being manufactured.
Two years after the Colt House Revolver, a year after the Colt Open Top, and almost simultaneously alongside the Colt Peacemaker, the Colt New Line was one of the first metallic cartridge, rear-loading revolvers manufactured by Colt. It was designed to be a handy pocket-carry revolver, chambered in .22 rimfire, which was very popular for self-defense in those days. The revolver features 7 shots of .22 rimfire. Of all the Colt “New Line” revolvers made, the .22 caliber was the only one featuring a 7-shot cylinder. All other calibers utilized a 5-shot cylinder.
The overall condition is fine. Factory engraving with nickel finish and fire blue accents. Solid mother of pearl grips. The action is excellent. The bore is bright with sharp rifling. The numbers match.
