Product Description
Experimental/Trial AMES Sword Co 1906 Cavalry Saber Antique Pre-WWI A.S.Co.
Preceding Patton’s Model of 1913
Here we present an antique US 1905/1906 Cavalry Saber, made by the Ames Sword Company in 1906 in Chicopee, Massachusetts. Only 1,039 produced. This was a piece that was made in very limited numbers to be tried in the years preceding the Great War. It was desirable at that time to move to a straighter blade for thrusting rather than the curvier Model 1860 with its somewhat curvier blade for cutting and thrusting, which had been in use since the American Civil War. This 1906 saber has a steel guard that looks very similar to the later Patton sword’s guard. This one has a straight, tapered grip that is footlike at the pommel. The wrap is sharkskin with a braided wire. The ricasso is marked with the Ordnance flaming bomb along with the date that has been punched out and the maker “A.S.Co”. The other side is simply marked “U.S.”
The overall condition is very good. Straight blade with a silvery patina. The hilt is solid and the wrap is tight, showing some use. These were experimental swords and, though very well-designed and made, were not selected and therefore no scabbards were ever made for them. This one comes in a Japanese leather wrapped wooden scabbard that fits it nicely and is in generally good condition for the age.
