ENGRAVED P1857 British VOLUNTEER ENGINEER’S Sword w/Etched Blade & SCABBARD
With PIERCED-THROUGH DECORATION
Here we present an Engraved Victorian British Volunteer Engineer’s Officer’s Sword, made circa the mid to late 1800s. The Corps of Royal Engineers, usually called the Royal Engineers (RE), and commonly known as the Sappers, is the engineering arm of the British Army. It provides military engineering and other technical support to the British Armed Forces and is headed by the Chief Royal Engineer. The Corps Headquarters and the Royal School of Military Engineering are in Chatham in Kent, England. The corps is divided into several regiments, barracked at various places in the United Kingdom and around the world.
Here is an example of a sought after 1857 Pattern, with the pierced acanthus leaf design hilt. The 32-1/2 inch blade is crisply etched with foliate designs, the Victorian Royal Cypher, and designs of the artillery, showing this engineer was assigned to an artillery regiment, no doubt to maintain their guns.
This example features an etched blade, a brass guard with engraved and pierced through decoration, a sharkskin grip, and a metal scabbard.
The overall condition is good. The blade has retained some nice shimmer where the finish remains with average dings. A slight bend is found at the tip. Clear etchings. The hand guard has a bit of wiggle around the tang. Good scabbard.
Overall length: 38 inches.
Blade length: 32-1/2 inches.
