ENGRAVED Mid-1800s English ARMSTRONG Antique .50 Percussion POCKET Pistol
English SELF DEFENSE Pistol Made Circa 1840
Here we present an antique Engraved English Armstrong Percussion Pocket/Muff Pistol, made circa the mid-1800s in Birmingham, England. This pistol features a large .50 caliber “manstopping” bore that would have been tucked into one’s belt or holstered. This pistol would have been most at home in a gentleman’s coat pocket to have against ne’er do wells and ruffians roaming the city streets in tumultuous Europe in the middle of the 19th century. This pistol could have been the type of pistol a soldier would have possibly purchased on his own to bring to battle in case he was to come into contact with the enemy.
The “Pocket Pistol” name says it all. They were the “Saturday Night Specials” of the 16th-19th century. Before the Deringer, they were “Gentleman’s” or “Muff Pistols”, typically, a smaller pistol that was easily concealed. They were favored among the gentry and women because of these traits. Men would carry them concealed in a waistcoat pocket and women would hide them in a hand muff.
The action does not function as the hammer will not hold in the cock position. Smooth, good bore for its age. Engraved lock, hammer, and trigger guard. Worn grip checkering. Light repairs to the stock and forend, remain stable. Ramrod absent.
