Product Description

Engraved J.P. SAUER & SOHN Side x Side Boxlock 16 g. HAMMERLESS Shotgun C&R

German DOUBLE BARREL 16 Gauge with EXTRACTORS

Here we present a C&R J. P. Sauer & Sohn Double Barrel Side by Side 16 Gauge Hammerless Shotgun, manufactured circa 1927 in Suhl, Germany. The first Sauer company was founded in 1751 by Lorenz Sauer in Suhl, Thuringia, Germany, this locality being known as Waffenstqadt Suhl in the past because of its many gunmakers. In 1815 Johann-Gottlob Sauer started managing the firm and in 1835 Johann Paul Sauer became manager. It was in 1840 that Johann Paul and his son, Lorenz Sauer created the new name and trademark of J.P. Sauer & Sohn. J. P. Sauer and Sohn is the oldest recorded firearms manufacturer in Germany and is still active today.

This double barrel hammerless shotgun would have been used for putting game on the table or having a fun afternoon shooting clay pigeons at one’s shooting club. The frame was actually for a drilling and has both a set trigger in front as well as a sliding tang-mounted selector that enables one to select the rifle position versus the shotgun barrel. However, the barrels have been replaced with tubes that are also German BUG proofed of similar age, and the barrels face very well to the frame. The cheek rest of the stock is marked with “1874” surrounded by 4 eagle/S stamps.

The overall condition is very good. Original finish. The actions are excellent. The bores are smooth and bright. The stock is solid and smooth, though there is a well-executed repair through the pistol grip. Numbers match on the frame and attaching iron but the barrels do not.

This firearm is classified as a Curio & Relic.
