Engraved J. BEATTIE Full-Stock .45 Caliber Percussion BRITISH MATCH Rifle
Beautiful Handmade LONDON Precision Rifle
Here we present an antique J. Beattie Full Stock Percussion Match Rifle, made circa the mid-19th Century in London, England. Beattie is known as a maker of Match/Target rifles along with a variety of revolvers during the percussion period, some of which were imported to the United States. The top of the barrel flat reads “J. BEATTIE 205 REGENT STREET & 89 FENCHURCH STREET LONDON”. He was at this address between 1851 through 1882.
As mentioned above, the is a Match Rifle. In firearms, the term is used to refer to guns that are designed and manufactured in such a way that they have a relatively narrow tolerance and high level of accuracy. No standards are defined for its qualification and as such it is more of a relative term. In addition to its use in shooting sports, match grade equipment was used by sharpshooters during military conflicts.
The overall condition is very good. Original finish and plum colored patina. The markings are clear. The action is excellent. The bore is in good shape with strong rifling. The stock is sharply checkered and has subtle but beautiful grain structure.
