Engraved HOPKINS & ALLEN Antique “BLUE JACKET No. 2” Single Action Revolver
NICE Spur Trigger, Special HIDEOUT GUN
Here we present an antique Hopkins & Allen “BLUE JACKET No. 2” Spur Trigger Revolver, made circa 1871-79. Pocket-sized revolvers, produced by various companies, were often cheaper than renowned brands like Colt, leading to the discontinuation of some Colt lines. These affordable firearms were small enough for easy concealment, providing a sense of security even in towns with firearm restrictions. The Hopkins & Allen model, with patent dates of March 28, 1871, and May 27, 1879, indicates it was made between the early and late 1870s.
The term for these revovlers emerged in 1948 from a Duncan McConnel article in the NRA’s American Rifleman. A decade later, Donald Blake Webster’s book, highlights the numerous companies producing these firearms, often with whimsical names like Defender and Blue Jacket. Typically, rimfire with spur triggers, these revolvers, while lacking the fame of Colt or Smith & Wesson, mark an intriguing period in American history and are accessible to collectors at a low investment.
The overall condition is good. Gray patina. The action functions but intermittently indexes. The bore has dimmed and maintains serviceable rifling. Both grips are in good shape with light handing wear. Legible markings. Engraved frame, backstrap, and barrel.
