ENGRAVED & GOLD INLAID Antique French GOSSET Perc. SIDE by SIDE DB Shotgun
By Renowned French Gunmaker LOUIS-MARIN GOSSET
Here we present an antique Engraved and Gold Inlaid French Double Barrel Percussion Side by Side Shotgun, made by Louis-Marin Gosset circa the early 1830s in Paris, France. This gun was made by the revered Parisian gunsmith Louis-Marin Gosset sometime somewhere around 1830. Gosset worked from 1793-1813 as an assistant to Nicholas-Noël Boutet, who was the armorer to the Crown, “arquebusier ordinair du Roi” for Louis XVI, and also made weapons for Napoleon I. He was the director of the Versailles State Arms Factory, where more than 600,000 weapons were produced under his directorship. Gosset’s tutelage and skill were obtained directly from what many consider to be the pinnacle of French gunmaking.
It features a short forend stock and dual sidelock hammers. This would likely have been exported from France to a country like the United States with a thriving market for all sorts of firearms. As people moved West and settled in remote areas, hunting was especially important to put food on the table and for protecting the homestead. This would have been a great gun for hunting small game.
The overall condition is good. Original Damascus pattern on the barrels along with gold markings. The actions are excellent. Bores are rough and dark. There is something stuck midway in the right bore that appears to of been there for quite some time. Stock shows use and there is a stable crack bisecting the trigger plate. Otherwise, solid. This may not be a shooter but it is a handsome piece for display purposes.
Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
