Product Description

ENGRAVED English R.S. CLARK Antique SILVER BANDED Percussion POCKET Pistol

English SELF DEFENSE Pistol Made Circa 1840

Here we present an antique Engraved English R.S. Clark Silver Banded Percussion Pocket/Muff Pistol, made circa 1840 in London, England. This pistol boasts a substantial .45 caliber bore, often described as “man-stopping,” designed to pack a serious punch. Its size and shape suggest it was meant to be tucked into a belt or holster for quick access. Visually, it’s quite handsome, and in the 19th-century European cities filled with tumult and unrest, such a pistol would have been a trusty companion—a small but reliable safeguard kept in a coat pocket to ward off trouble from rowdy street thugs and ruffians.

The name “Pocket Pistol” really says it all. These tiny firearms—small, easily concealed, and handy for quick self-defense. Before the Deringer gained fame, they were known as “Gentleman’s” or “Muff Pistols.” Typically, they were compact enough to be slipped into a waistcoat pocket or hidden inside a muff, making them popular among the upper classes and women who valued discreet protection. Men often carried them concealed in their clothing, while women kept them hidden in their muff for safety during uncertain times.

The overall condition is good. Fully functioning action. The bore is in good shape for its age with serviceable rifling. Lightly engraved. Repairs have been made to the left forend and around the guard tang. The wood is well used with a few stable splits throughout. Silver and gold inlaid barrel bands. “CLARK” engraved lock. The number “10” is marked on the left wrist.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 5 inches.

Caliber: .45 Percussion

Overall condition as seen in photos.
