ENGRAVED English Antique LARGE BORE 9 Ga. Percussion Single Barrel SHOTGUN
NICE British Mid-1800s Large Bore FOWLING Piece
Here we present an antique Percussion Large Bore Fowling Piece, made circa the mid-19th Century likely in Birmingham, England. Birmingham was the epicenter for English gunmaking all the way through the turn of the century. This is an English fowling piece that is elegant in its simplicity and practicality. This hammer gun would have been used primarily for putting game on the table or defending one’s homestead.
During this era, there were many English and Belgian gunmakers who were capitalizing on the eager markets in the United States. This 9 gauge fowling piece was made in a great gauge to go after high flying geese and ducks. Its mid-length barrel made for easy hunting in the dense woods or traipsing through the marsh looking for ducks and geese. This would have been a staple of most homesteads hanging over the mantle during the tumultuous times of the mid-1800s.
The overall condition is good. Strong action. Bright, smooth bore. The stock is in fine shape with little handling wear. Sharp wrist checkering. This example has traditional floral engravings on some metal parts. Had been refinished. Scattered plum patina.
