Engraved COGSWELL & HARRISON Avant Tout BOXLOCK SXS HAMMERLESS Shotgun C&R
Handsome Side by Side Double with Ejectors!
Here we present a Cogswell & Harrison Avant Tout (meaning “Above all Others”) Boxlock Double Barrel Side by Side Hammerless Shotgun, made circa 1897 to 1914 in London, England. Cogswell & Harrison was established in May 1770 and is London’s oldest surviving gun maker.
Over the years, Cogswell & Harrison has manufactured a quite diverse range of sporting shotguns and rifles during its long history. In 2008 the company was purchased by the Brennan family, the proprietors of Ardee Sports Company. This would have been a great gun for fowl hunting.
The overall condition is very good. The action is strong. The bores are smooth and mirror bright; in fine shape. The barrel has a nice resounding ring with no buzz or rattle. The frame and trigger guard contain well-defined floral engravings that remain sharp. There is a chip missing from the left side of the forearm and remains solid otherwise. Matching numbers on the forearm attaching iron, frame, barrels, and trigger guard tang. The light checkered wrist is a nice touch. Serrated back of the butt stock instead of a butt plate. There is a slight loss of wood on each side of the forearm, and the areas have smoothed over from decades of wear. Has ejectors.
