ENGRAVED & CARVED Antique MATCHING PAIR Percussion Pistols MID-1800s BRACE
Matching SELF DEFENSE Style Sidearms
Here we present a Matching Brace of antique Percussion Pocket/Belt Pistols, made circa the 1850s. Here are two examples of high quality craftsmanship. Both of these pistols are matching with 5-5/8” barrels. These medium bore pistols likely were used primarily as a self-defense weapon. Their effective range was short, and they were frequently used as an adjunct to a sword. Pistols in this era were usually smoothbore, although some rifled pistols were produced. They came in a variety of sizes with the smallest being less than 6 inches and the largest ranging to over 20 inches.
These types of pistols would have been carried in the busy streets of any big city during the tumultuous times of the early 1800’s in the United States and Western Europe. The “Pocket Pistol” name says it all. They were the “Saturday Night Specials” of the 16th-18th century. Along with the Deringer, they were “Gentleman’s” or “Muff Pistols”, Typically, a smaller pistol that was easily concealed. They were favored among the gentry and women because of these traits.
The overall condition is very good. Original finish and patina. The actions are excellent. The bores are in good condition and smooth. The circumference of the pommel of one gun was either made with a graft or has a very straight repair. Solid stocks throughout. Very nice carvings on the top of each stock. Engraved brass hardware. The hammers are cast as animals. The tops of each of the barrels has a floral inlay. Horned tips to the stocks and one of the ramrods.
