ENGRAVED British Antique BOXLOCK FLINTLOCK POCKET/MUFF Pistol by TWIGG .42
NICE Screw Barrel FLINTLOCK from the Early-1800s
Here we present an antique Twigg Marked Boxlock Screw Barrel Flintlock Self Defense Pistol, made circa the early 1800s in London, England. This little self-defense pistol would have been most at home in the pocket of anyone in the busy cities of London, Paris and Liege during the very early 1800s.
This pistol features an internal lock that aided in protecting the action and being a little smoother in the pocket. It also has a screw-off barrel that would have eliminated the need for a ramrod as well as making a better gas seal as a slightly larger ball could be loaded from the breech end rather than a slightly undersized ball being forced down the muzzle end.
This pistol is small, light and simple. The “Pocket Pistol” name says it all. They were the “Saturday Night Specials” of the 18th-19th century. Before the Deringer, they were “Gentleman’s” or “Muff Pistols”, typically, a smaller pistol that was easily concealed. They were favored among the gentry and women because of these traits. Men would carry them concealed in a waistcoat pocket and women would hide them in a hand muff.
The overall condition is good. Strong action. The bore is in good shape for its age. Sharp markings. Lightly engraved. Good grip with an expected amount of handled checkering. London proofs throughout.
