ENGRAVED Antique T. WIARD Full-Stock “MULE EAR” Sidehammer Percussion RIFLE
Scarce Early/Mid-1800s American Design SMOOTHBORE
Here we present an antique Scarce Engraved T. Wiard Full Stock Percussion Mule Ear Long Rifle, made circa the 1840s. The Mule Ear lock was invented in the United States somewhere around the mid-1830s. The history is pretty blurred as to who, where, and when the first one was made. It is believed that likely due to its appearance, much like an underhammer, it lacked general acceptance. These were not equipped with a half cock position.
This example’s stout octagonal barrel is in .48 caliber, large enough to take medium to large sized game or to defend the homestead against unwanted aggression.
The overall condition is good. Original brown patina. The action functions fully. Good bore for its age. Markings are legible. Lightly engraved lock. A crack is present on the left side of the forend and seems stable in its current configuration. A brass plate repair has been made on the underside of the forend. “T. WIARD” marked lock and barrel. “REMINGTON” is marked on the left barrel flat.
Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
Barrel is 36 inches.
Caliber: .48 Percussion
Overall condition as seen in photos.
