ENGRAVED Antique COLT Model 1862 POCKET NAVY Percussion Revolver
Scarce Pocket Model Made in 1866!
Here we present an Engraved Colt Pocket Navy Model 1862 Revolver in .36 Caliber, made circa 1866 in Hartford, Connecticut. The success of the original Colt Model 1851 Navy provided the foundation for the Model 1862 Pocket Navy percussion revolver. Unlike the larger Model 1851, the Model 1862 featured a five shot cylinder chambered in a .36 cap and ball. There were only 19,000 of this type produced by Colt. Like its predecessor, the 1862 Navy had an octagon barrel with a hinged loading lever underneath along with a brass trigger guard. A solid gun by Colt standards, its low availability has made it a rare item today. Sales were helped by use in the Civil War, as both sides utilized this revolver in the conflict. The Pocket Navy shared serial numbering with the Model 1862 Police revolver, leading the latter to contain high serial numbers despite their actual production numbers.
This smaller, 5-shot, .36 caliber revolver resembles the 1849 Pocket Colt, except that the 1862 Pocket Navy has a rebated, round cylinder. Many of these were converted to metallic cartridges making this original percussion Model 1862 Pocket Navy among the harder guns to find still in cap-and-ball configuration.
This one has been engraved in the pattern of Gustave Young’s shop. Young, who started his prodigious engraving career at the age of 14, emigrated to the US and became Samuel Colt’s master engraver. This is similar to his No. 2 Pattern and includes the wolf’s head engraved on either side of the hammer. It also features ivory grips. It comes in an original wooden case with a purple velvet lining.
The overall condition is very good. Original silver finish with gold plating remnants on the hammer and loading lever. Excellent action. Dim bore with strong rifling. Wonderful floral scroll engraving. Very nice ivory grip with less than expected wear. The barrel and frame numbers match (34969) with the wedge, trigger guard, and grip frame having their own matching numbers set (35084). It is interesting that these two number sets are only 115 digits apart. The included case and accessories (powder flask, ball mold, balls, and cap tins) are in good shape.
