ENGRAVED Antique BELGIAN 12 g. Double Barrel SIDE x SIDE Percussion SHOTGUN
Mid-1800s HOMESTEAD Hunting/Fowling Piece
Here Ancestry Guns presents an antique Engraved Belgian Double Barrel Side by Side Percussion Shotgun, manufactured circa the 1850s likely in Liege, Belgium. During this era, there were many English and Belgian gunmakers who were capitalizing on the eager markets in the United States.
This 12-gauge shotgun was a sought after gauge, due to the ability to use it for medium or large size game, along with waterfowl. It’s relatively short 31 inch barrel made for easy hunting in the dense woods or traipsing through the marsh looking for ducks and geese. This would have been a staple for most homesteads hanging over the mantle during the tumultuous times of the mid-1800s. It would have been used for putting food on the table or warding off unwanted aggression.
Original mixes of gray and brown patinas. Twist pattern barrels. Both sides of the action function. The left hammer is missing the hammer screw. The triggers are loose but function. Good, smooth bores for their ages. A few dents are found on the barrels but do not appear to effect the bore. Solid stock and forend, containing average dents, dings and handling. Lightly engraved locks. Front bead sight. Replacement ramrod. Replacement barrel wedge.
