Likely European Self-defense BELT/MUFF Pistol!

Here we present an antique Boxlock Percussion Pocket Pistol, made circa the 1850s, likely in either London, England, or Liege, Belgium. Both London and Liege have long been manufacturing centers for the world’s arms trade. This small type of pistol was very popular from the 18^th and into the 19^th Centuries in Europe, as well as the colonies that features a .31 caliber bore that would have been worn on the belt or holstered as it was possibly carried into battle after being privately purchased. This is a neat old pistol and one can easily imagine the sight of its gaping bore would certainly be a deterrent to would be scoundrels. It was of course made primarily for self-defense, especially in cities or traveling around the countryside.

This little self-defense pistol would have been most at home in the pocket of anyone in the busy cities of London, Liege, or Paris during the tumultuous times of the mid-1800s. These type pistols are small, light and simple. The “Pocket Pistol” name says it all. They were the “Saturday Night Specials” of the 16th-19th century. Before the Deringer, they were “Gentleman’s” or “Muff Pistols”, typically, a smaller pistol that was easily concealed. They were favored among the gentry and women because of these traits. Men would carry them concealed in a waistcoat pocket and women would hide them in a hand muff.

The overall condition is good. The action functions, although the trigger spring is weak. Good bore. This example is lightly engraved. Solid grip. Markings are eligible. “1942” is marked on the left frame with “TED. A.” on the right.
