English Engraved ROBINSON & SON Antique ~7 Gauge Shotgun Fowler PERCUSSION
Large Bore FOWLING Piece .90 Caliber
Here we present an antique L. Robinson & Sons Large Bore Fowling Piece. This large shotgun was made in a great gauge to go after high flying geese and ducks. Its mid-length 36 inch barrel made for easy hunting in the dense woods or traipsing through the marsh looking for ducks and geese. This would have been a staple of most homesteads hanging over the mantle during the mid-to-late-1800s.
It features a multifaceted breech end that transitions to round as it moves toward the muzzle with rings between. The top barrel flat bears the makers’ mark “L. ROBINSON & SON”. The lock is of the Enfield Pattern 1853 variety and is even marked with Queen Victoria’s royal crown cipher at the back of the lock. The middle of the lock is dated 1859 and there is a very faint, perhaps purposefully effaced marking just below the date. The lock plate, hammer, barrel breech and tang, trigger guard, etc. are very nicely engraved in tight English scroll. This lock was probably some kind of overrun from an Ordnance contract that was repurposed for commercial and sporting guns.
The overall condition is very good. Nice patina throughout. Clear markings. The action is excellent. The bore is smooth and clear. The stock is solid. The ramrod rib on the bottom of the barrel has crumbled a bit on the left side toward the middle and the rib is a bit detached here.
