Early-Republic NEW ENGLAND Smoothbore LONG RIFLE .54 Caliber Full-Stock
Workhorse Long Gun for Massachusetts & Beyond!
Here we present an antique New England Smoothbore Long Rifle, made circa the early-19th Century in Massachusetts. This is the style of a typical long gun from Massachusetts and the Boston area in particular for the era shortly after the American Revolution. The silver thumb plate with small flourish of engraving and silver wire inlay, the distinctive side plates, and the patch box are all indicative of this area and period and has a strong resemblance to Pratt’s work. Pratt’s rifles are featured and discussed on pages 293-296 of American Military Shoulder Arms, Volume 2 From the 1790s to the End of the Flintlock Period by George Moller. This example has an “R. ASHMORE/WARRANTED” lock, has a long, straight patchbox with a round finial with a point, and two small sideplates—one an oval and one a comet-shape—just like the one pictured in Moller’s book. Also compare to those attributed works of Thomas Holbrook, John Mason, and Lemuel Leland as pictured in Grinslade’s Flintlock Fowlers The First Guns Made in America.
This gun would have started out life as a flintlock and converted when the more reliable percussion firing system was introduced. Its stout octagonal barrel is in .54 caliber, large enough to take medium to large sized game or to defend the homestead against unwanted aggression. It is likely that this musket was originally longer and later cut down for handiness.
The overall condition is good+. Dark, even patina throughout. The action is strong. The bore is smooth and patinated. The stock shows use and has some splits around the muzzle end of the forestock and is overall solid and stable.
