Product Description

DRAGON Engraved 1740s ANTIQUE BRION of PARIS France .60 Caliber Belt PISTOL

Beautifully ENGRAVED with BRASS HARDWARE!

Here we present an antique French Percussion Holster Pistol, made by Brion of Paris circa the 1740s in Paris, France. Joseph Etienne Brion was a gunmaker in Paris between the years of 1740 through 1747. This pistol would have started off life as a flintlock when it was made 275 years ago. It is a testament to this pistol’s quality that it was still in use and worthy to receive such an update to the percussion firing system even decades after it was made.

This pistol is as gorgeous as it was practical for its time. The bore is a massive .60 caliber. The stock has beautiful grain and is carved to accentuate the ornate engraved brass hardware. Gradually sloping grip with a brass pommel cap gives it a graceful appearance. There is brass furniture throughout. The barrel begins octagonal and transitions to round. Beautiful and intricate engravings and castings throughout take this gun to another level. The ramrod tubes have a twisted fluted appearance and the lower ramrod tube has the head of a dragon breathing fire. The trigger guard has a detailed finial and the whole is engraved with a floral motif. The pommel, which would have served as a weapon itself, also bears floral designs and symbols of heraldry. The sideplate is intricately cast with interwoven serpentine dragons. The lock is engraved with the maker’s mark: “BRION A PARIS”, along with implements of war. Looking down at the top of the barrel, you can see that the original breech of the barrel was removed and fitted with a new section with a percussion nipple bolster installed.

The overall condition is very good. A couple repairs on the forestock. The action is excellent. Original nipple peened. The bore is smooth and dark with age. Here is a beautiful French pistol that would have been fit for a gentleman and an officer.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 11-1/2 inches.

Caliber: .60 Percussion

Overall condition as seen in photos.
