Product Description

DETROIT POLICE DEPT. Roaring Twenties COLT POLICE POSITIVE .38 Revolver C&R DPD

c1915 mfr. LE Double Action Sidearm

Here we present a C&R Detroit Police Department Issued Colt Police Positive, made in 1915 by the Colt Manufacturing Company in Hartford, Connecticut, with a production run from 1907 through 1947. This one is marked on the underside of the grip frame with “D.P.D” with an inventory number of “89”.

The Colt Police Positive is a small-frame, double-action revolver featuring a six-round cylinder, chambered for either .32 or .38 caliber. It was also later offered in .22 caliber cartridges. Designed primarily for sale to federal, state, or local law enforcement agencies, the Police Positive was introduced into the overall firearms market by Colt’s Manufacturing Company in 1905. The Colt Police Positive was an improvement of Colt’s earlier “New Police” revolver, upgraded with an internal hammer block safety.

The Police Positive was very successful venture for Colt. Along with the Colt Official Police, it dominated the law enforcement firearms market in the early 1900s. The Positive was itself incrementally modified in 1908, forming the basis for Colt’s Police Positive Special model. The Colt Police Positive Special was a slight improvement of Colt’s earlier Police Positive model with the only differences being a slightly lengthened cylinder and elongated and strengthened frame to allow the chambering of the longer, more powerful .32-20 Winchester Center Fire and .38 Special cartridges.

The overall condition is fine. Original blued finish with fire blued accents on the trigger and hammer. Numbers match on frame and cylinder crane. The action is excellent in both double and single action. The bore is shiny with sharp rifling. The grips are replica replacements that are in near fine condition. A very neat piece of Detroit history that would have been in service during the Roaring Twenties!
