Product Description

“DENMARK” Inscribed Engraved Antique CIVIL WAR SMITH & WESSON No 1 REVOLVER

ENGRAVED and INSCRIBED .22 Pocket Revolver

Here we present an antique, Factory Engraved & Inscribed Smith & Wesson Model No. 1 Second Issue Revolver in .22 Rimfire, manufactured circa 1863 in Springfield, Massachusetts. The name “D. Denmark” is nicely scripted down the back of the grip frame. Given the unusual last name, we did some research and discovered two possibilities, very probably related to one another, in Upstate New York. Both are named Duane Denmark, and they are the only Denmarks on a very short list who fought during the American Civil War and have a first name beginning with “D”. Both were about age 19 when they enlisted at the rank of Private, one in Albany to Company M of the NY 2nd Cavalry on 21 September 1864; the other 21 December 1863 at Johnsburgh, NY into Company H of the NY 14th Heavy Artillery. Both of these units experienced heavy casualties in the vicious war. The latter was discharged 15 March 1864 on disability at Fort Richmond at New York Harbor, while the former made his way through the war and mustered out 5 June 1865 in Alexandria, Virginia. Pocket revolvers were extremely popular during this period, and many a soldier left home with one in his pocket. We have seen multiple engraved No. 1s and they have had the names of officers and enlisted men alike, and more often cavalry than infantry or artillery. Engraving an item with an inscription or the recipient’s name was also very much in style and considered a thoughtful and sentimental gift.

The overall condition is fine. Lots of original blue and silver plate finish. This example is inscribed to “D. Denmark” on the backstrap. The action is strong and tight. The bore is semi-bright in very good shape. The engravings are sharp on both the frame and barrel. The numbers match. The rosewood grips are smooth and glossy. This is a wonderful historical treasure the likes of which are seldom encountered!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 3-1/4 inches.

Caliber: .22 Short Rimfire

Overall condition as seen in photos.
