Product Description

COASTAL Panel Scene ENGRAVED Antique SMITH & WESSON .38 S&W Revolver 1880s

With Leather Bound PERIOD CASE & PEARL GRIPS!

Here we present an Engraved Antique Smith & Wesson .38 S&W Double Action Revolver, 2nd Model, made circa 1880 in Springfield, Massachusetts. This example showcases a period punch-dot floral motif throughout, accented with red colored pistils. The rear-left portion of the frame features a coastal scene with a series of slope-roofed buildings in the foreground, a bay, a sailing boat in the middle ground, with mountains or hills in the background. The color engraving is but rarely seen on any engraved firearm. The architecture of the panel scene almost appears Japanese with the slanted roof. The flowers are reminiscent of cherry blossoms. One thing that really sticks out is the obvious difference in the engraving on the right-rear portion of the frame. The two strands of deep vertical lines and the lighter horizontal lines between make almost a chevron converging on the hammer screw to form the point. The closer you look, the more these look like characters. We have spent a fair amount of time turning it every which way and looking at it under magnification. It looks like it says something, but we have not yet been able to decipher it. If it says anything at all, it might be in a different language. Regardless, this is a gem of a Smith & Wesson from the 1880s, in amazing condition, that comes in a very old, fitted, leather bound case. It is sure to captivate you just as it did us.

The overall condition is excellent. Wonderful engraving, virtually complete nickel finish with blued accents, and vibrant case colors. The action is strong. The bore is in fine shape. Pearl grips are solid and luminescent. Here is a great example of a revolver that would have been carried in the years prior to the turn of the century!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 3-1/4 inches.

Caliber: .38 S&W

Overall condition as seen in photos.
