CIVIL WAR SCARCE Antique FRANK WESSON Small Frame M1862 2nd Type .22 Pistol
1 of 2,000 Tip-Up Examples Made
Here we present an antique Frank Wesson Small Frame Model 1862 .22 Caliber Rimfire Single Shot Tip-Up Pistol, made circa 1864 in Worcester, Massachusetts. Only 2,000 of these 2nd Type are thought to have been made. Frank Wesson was the younger brother of Daniel B. Wesson, of Smith & Wesson, as well as Edwin Wesson, who was also a highly-esteemed gunsmith in the mid-to-late-1800s. The fame of his family’s name was not lost on Frank, but he was, in fact, a prolific firearms designer and maker in his own right.
This spur trigger pistol features a 3-1/2 inch barrel that begins octagonal and transitions to round at the mid-point. The top of the barrel flat reads “FRANK WESSON WORCESTER MASS./PAT’D OCT 25 1859 & NOV 11 1862”.
The overall condition is good. Strong action. Some traces of original finish are present on the barrel. Both grips are solid with average handling wear. The bore is clear with some shimmer, but has some spots of pitting. Markings are legible. Here is a very nice, scarce Frank Wesson Model 1862!
Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
