CIVIL WAR Non-Regulation BAKER & McKENNEY Marked M1860 HEAVY CAVALRY Saber

With BRASS HILT and IRON SCABBARD

Here we present an antique Civil War Era Baker & McKenney Marked Non-Regulation Model 1860 Heavy Cavalry Saber, made circa 1864-65 likely in the Solingen, Germany. Baker & McKenney of New York was founded in January of 1864 by Laura Baker, widow of military goods dealer John A. Baker, and former employee James McKenney. These were independently manufactured, likely in Germany, and offered for private sale by Baker & McKenney. This would have been carried into battle, especially by those who fought on horseback.

The overall length is 40 inches, with a 34 inch blade. The ricasso is marked “B-M” with the maker’s mark worn off above it. The maker’s marking was possibly P.D. Luneschloss of Solingen, a very well-known maker. This sword sports a brass hilt, a wire wrapped leather grip, an iron scabbard, and a leather belt hanger.

The overall condition is good. The blade is bright but does contain a slight bend about ¾ up from the base. Solid hilt. Good scabbard overall, contains a few dents, of which, do not impede the draw.
