CIVIL WAR Era Antique U.S. Ames M1860 Pattern Light CAVALRY Saber SCABBARD
AMERICAN CIVIL WAR Era Cavalry Blade Dated 1864
Here we present an antique U.S. Model 1860 Pattern Light Cavalry Saber, made by the Ames Mfg. Co. in 1864 for the American Civil War. The Model 1860 was a lighter and nimbler successor to the 1840 Heavy Cavalry Saber. The M1860 went on to be used by cavalry during the Indian Wars and even in the Spanish-American War. The Ames Mfg. Company alone produced 200,000 of these swords, with other contractors fulfilling several tens of thousands each. This sword has an overall length is 40-1/2 inches with a double fuller blade dated 1864 and measuring 34-1/2 inches. It sports a brass hilt, wire wrapped leather grip, and an iron scabbard.
The right side of the ricasso bears “U.S.”, the inspector mark “G.K.C.” for Sub-Ordnance Inspector George K. Charter, and the year “1864”. The left side of the ricasso bears the maker’s mark “Ames Mfg. Co/Chicopee/Mass.”
The overall condition is very good. Bright blade with little to no dings. Solid hilt. Tight twisted brass wire. The leather grip is in very good shape. Markings on both sides of the ricasso are legible. The scabbard is good.
