CIVIL WAR Era Antique J.M. COOPER “NAVY” Model .36 PERCUSSION Revolver 1864
DOUBLE ACTION REVOLVER Based on the Colt 1849 Pocket
Here we present an antique J.M. Cooper & Co. Double Action Navy Revolver, made circa 1864-65 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, with a production run between 1864 and 1869. There were roughly 11,000 of these revolvers manufactured during its five year production run. During a time of rapid innovation in firearms technology and an insatiable market due to rapid expansion and the American Civil War, dozens of makers seized their opportunity to put their ideas on the market.
The J.M. Cooper Double Action Revolver took the concept of the Colt 1849 Pocket Model and improved it by giving it a double action firing mechanism, resulting in their own “Pocket” model. This is an example of a slightly larger, .36 caliber revolver, probably inspired to try to obtain U.S. Military contracts. As mentioned, only about 11,000 of these Navy Models were made during its production run.
Despite its formal name involving “Navy”, the Cooper Double Action Navy received the generic name “Navy” from the Colt standard for .36 caliber revolvers evolving from the original Colt Model 1851 Navy.
The overall condition is fine. Original blue, case color and silver finishes. The action is excellent. The bore is in fine condition with sharp rifling. Grips is solid. Numbers match.
