CIVIL WAR Era Antique BACON MFG. CO. Brass Frame .30 RF Single Shot PISTOL
Early 1860s Conceal & Carry Pistol in .30 Rimfire
Here we present an antique Brass Frame Bacon Mfg. Co. .30 Caliber Rimfire Single Shot Pistol, made circa the Civil War ear in Norwich, Connecticut. It is estimated that less than 2000 of these single shot pistols were manufactured. It chambered a single shot of .30 Rimfire Short, and loads via a side-swiveling barrel. This would have been intended for self-defense in the mid-19th Century.
Thomas K. Bacon was the founder of the company and was also involved with the Manhattan Fire Arms Co. as the superintendent. He also had business dealings with Ethan Allen and Allen & Thurber. When Manhattan moved their operation away from Norwich, Bacon left the company to stay behind and work on his own firearms manufacturing company. Part of Bacon’s contract with Manhattan included a “no-compete” clause that he would have been in violation of had the heads of Manhattan had bothered to sign the agreement. Nevertheless, they still took him to court with no official judgement recorded. Bacon’s arms were popular on the commercial market and many made their way onto Civil War battlefields upon being privately purchased by soldiers.
The trigger return spring does not function, causing the rest of the action to not function. The action will function is the trigger is manually set. Good bore for its age. Both grips are split and remain seated in their current configuration. Numbers match. Missing front sight.
