CIVIL WAR Era Antique AMES MANUFACTURING Co. U.S. Model 1840 NCO Sword
UNION ARMY Non-Commissioned Officers Sword w/SCABBARD
Here we present an antique Ames Manufacturing Co. U.S. Model 1840 Non- Commissioned Officers Sword, made circa 1863 in Chicopee, Massachusetts. The Model 1840 NCO was issued to sergeants as a secondary weapon. It saw use primarily during the Mexican-American War and the American Civil War.
This nice Ames Manufacturing Company sword has an overall length of 35-1/2 inches with a straight triangular etched blade length of 29”. It has one folding languet, patriotic motifs on the hilt, wire wrapped grip, and an iron scabbard. There is dark mottled gray and brown patina on the blade, aged patina on the brass.
The overall condition is very good. Bright, nicely etched blade. The hand guard has a bit of wiggle and the twisted wire has lost tension. This example includes a nice scabbard that remains in good shape.
