Non-Commissioned Officers Sword in the UNION ARMY
Here we present an antique Ames Manufacturing Co. U.S. Model 1840 Non- Commissioned Officers Sword, made in 1864 in Chicopee, Massachusetts. The Model 1840 NCO was issued to sergeants as a secondary weapon. It saw use primarily during the Mexican-American War and the American Civil War.
This 1864 dated Ames Model 1840 NCO sword has a 32 inch straight blade with an overall length of 38-1/2 inches. The left side is marked “Made By / AMES MFg. Co. / CHICOPEE / MASS (faint)”. The right ricasso is marked “US/G.K.C./1864”. The inspection initials “G.K.C.” are for George K. Charter. This sword has a brass hilt and a leather scabbard included.
The overall condition is good. Straight blade with light gray patina. Clear markings. Martially inspected. Solid hilt. The leather scabbard has an old bend in it and the hanger is dented. Otherwise, good condition.
