CIVIL WAR Era Antique ALLEN & WHEELOCK .42 RF DROP BREECH Single Shot Rifle
Falling Block Single Shot Rifle
Here we present an antique Allen & Wheelock Drop Breech Falling Block Rifle in .42 Caliber Rimfire, made circa the early 1860s in Worcester, Massachusetts, with a production run between 1860 to 1871. Fewer than 2,000 of these rifles are thought to have been made in any variant. Though not standard issue, this rifle saw service in the American civil War through private purchases by soldiers. It features a half-octagonal, half-round barrel with a very neat adjustable rear sight. The rear sight tips and its arm points to various ranges which also have notches which allow the arm to rest in under spring tension. The lowering action of the breech block automatically ejected the spent cartridge.
In between the wood components was the iron receiver which contained the internal working components. The trigger was fitted within a ring guard under the body and ahead of the straight hand grip and made up the lever needed to lower the breech block to accept a fresh round. The hammer was very identifiable at the rear of the receiver with its pronounced tang. Barrel lengths varied based on requirements and measured from 23 to 28 inches and clearly stamped with the Allen & Wheelock company marking.
The overall condition is very good. Strong action. Bright rifled bore. The receiver has maintained a bright gray patina. The buttstock has some wiggle where it meets the frame. Period repairs to the rear of the tang are stable. Markings are clear. The rear sight is fully functional.
