CIVIL WAR Era 1862 Dated Antique AMES U.S. Model 1840 LIGHT ARTILLERY Saber
CONNECTICUT MARKED Union Saber with SCABBARD
Here we present an antique Connecticut Marked U.S. Ames Model 1840 Light Artillery Saber, made circa 1862 in Chicopee, Massachusetts. The Model 1840 features a beautifully curved blade with a single brass knucklebow instead of a basket hilt. The grip is wrapped in leather and braided wire. The Ames address on is on the left side of the ricasso. along with the date. The right side of the ricasso is marked with the 1862 date and “CONN”. The overall length is 37-1/2 inches with the blade measuring 32 inches. This saber would have been used in the American Civil War by Union Artillery Troops.
The overall condition is good. Gray blade patina with dings throughout. Solid hilt all around, with tight brass wire. Legible markings. “1862” dated ricasso. The scabbard is in good shape all around.
