CIVIL WAR Dated Antique U.S. MANSFIELD & LAMB M1860 Light CAVALRY Saber
Civil War Cavalry Blade Dated 1862 with SCABBARD
Here we present an antique U.S. Model 1860 Light Cavalry Saber, made by Mansfield & Lamb for the American Civil War in Forest Dale, Rhode Island in 1862. Mansfield & Lamb was a textile and tool company before the Civil War. With seven contracts totaling 37,458 Model 1860 sabers issued to Federal Horsemen under the U.S. Government Ordnance Department contract of February 1862, the company made swords throughout the entire war. Unlike Ames, this company only had one style of mark, as well as making only one style of sword, the Model 1860 Cavalry Saber.
The 1860 was a lighter and nimbler successor to the 1840 Heavy Cavalry Saber. The M1860 went on to be used by cavalry during the Indian Wars and even in the Spanish-American War. The overall length is 40-1/2 inches with the blade measuring 34-1/2 inches. It sported a three-branch brass hilt, wire wrapped leather grip, and a black enameled iron scabbard.
The overall condition is very good. Bright blade. The hilt is solid and the brass wire remains tight. Legible markings. “1862” dated ricasso. Good scabbard.
