U.S. Civil War Cavalry Blade Dated 1865
Here we present an antique U.S. Model 1860 Light Cavalry Saber, made by Emerson & Silver for the American Civil War in Trenton, New Jersey in 1865. Emerson & Silver were sword makers between 1860 and 1865 with contracts totaling 27,060 Model 1860 sabers to be issued to Federal Horsemen under the U.S. Government Ordnance Department contract of February 1862. The company made a total of nearly 50,000 swords throughout the entire war. When the fighting stopped in 1865, the company went under and folded.
The overall length is 40-1/2” with the blade measuring 34-1/2”. The Blade is marked U.S./J.M./1865. The initials “J.M.” are for sub-ordnance inspector Major Julian McAllister.
