William H. Hill of the 19^th TN CAV & 48^th TN INF

Here we present an antique Musketoon Length Harpers Ferry U.S. Model 1816 Musket, manufactured at the Harpers Ferry Arsenal in Harpers Ferry, Virginia in 1839. This piece has been inscribed with the name “W.H. Hill” and has been attributed to Sergeant William H. Hill of Mt. Pleasant, Tennessee. William enlisted the 20^th of June 1861 and mustered into the 19^th TN Cavalry—the war began the 12^th of April, so this was very early in the conflict. On the 1^st of April 1862 he transferred to the 48^th TN Infantry, Company E. He died of disease not quite 5 months later according to one record. However, his name is listed among the “Confederate Dead Killed in the Battle of Knoxville” in Bethel Confederate Cemetery in Knoxville, Tennessee.

This musket would have started out life as a flintlock and converted to percussion in the years leading up to the American Civil War. It also would have been a full-length musket, but the cavalry needs shorter, lighter, handier weapons and the Confederates, being short on manufacturing capabilities themselves, were known to shorten full-length muskets in this manner.

The town of Harpers Ferry is nestled into a valley at the confluence of the Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers. Originally located in Virginia, Harpers Ferry became part of the new state of West Virginia in the middle of the Civil War in 1863. The Model 1816 was manufactured at the U.S. Armory there between 1816 and 1844 with over 350,000 produced during that period. The Type I musket was manufactured between 1816 and 1822. The Type II was made between 1822 and 1836, while the Type III was made between 1836 and 1844. This model was used by Texans during the Mexican-American War. During this conflict, the flintlock version of the Model 1816 was preferred by U.S. regular forces, due to percussion cap supply concerns. This model was also used during the early years of the American Civil War.

The lock is marked “Eagle/US” with the tail of the lock is marked “HARPERS/FERRY/1839”.

The overall condition is very good. Original patina. The action is excellent and strong. The bore is smooth and patinated. The stock is solid and showing some use. A fantastic piece of American history!
