CIVIL WAR Antique WEYERSBERG/HORSTMANN U.S. M1860 CAVALRY Sabre w/SCABBARD
Used by the Union During the AMERICAN CIVIL WAR
Here we present an antique U.S. Model of 1860 Cavalry Saber, made by W.H. Horstmann & Sons of New York and Philadelphia circa the early 1860s. Though they did make their own brass parts such as guards, pommel caps, and scabbard mounts, they were not in the business of making blades. This Model 1860 Cavalry Saber features a Weyersberg blade. The Weyersberg family was a major sword making family in Solingen, Germany, identified by the King’s head with a five point crown on the ricasso. The blade was acquired by Horstmann and assembled at his facility in Philadelphia, using the other parts which he produced.
The 1860 was a lighter and nimbler successor to the 1840 Heavy Cavalry Saber. The M1860 went on to be used by cavalry during the Indian Wars and even in the Spanish-American War. This sword has an overall length of 37 inches with a 31-1/2 inch patriotically etched blade. It has a brass guard, a leather grip, and a metal scabbard.
The overall condition is very good. The blade is bright and straight. Solid hilt and tight twisted brass wire. Both the markings and etchings are legible. Good sturdy iron scabbard.
Overall length: 36 inches.
Blade length: 30 inches.
