CIVIL WAR Antique U.S. SHARPS New Model 1859 .52 Caliber PERCUSSION Rifle
Scarce MARTIALLY INSPECTED Civil War
Here we present an antique U.S. Sharps New Model 1859 Rifle, made circa 1859-63 and still in its original percussion format. It is in the 39000 serial range. Over 100,000 Sharps rifles and carbines were purchased and used by the federal government during the American Civil War. The carbines were far more prolific. Approximately 7,300 New Model 1859 rifles such as this one were issued during the war, mostly to the Army. About 2,000 of those were issued to famed Berdan’s 1st & 2nd Regiments of Sharpshooters. Those have or had double set triggers.
The overall condition is very good. Robust action. Good bore with strong rifling with light texturing throughout. Nicely preserved leather sling. Solid walnut stock with four cartouches on the left side of the buttstock along with sub-inspector markings on both butt and fore stocks. This Model 1859 Sharps remains in its original percussion configuration but has been restocked with wood from a metallic cartridge conversion rifle. A scarce rifle in great shape!
