Product Description

CIVIL WAR Antique U.S. POULTNEY & TRIMBLE Smith’s Patent Cavalry SR Carbine

AMERICAN MACHINE WORKS w/Leather Cartridge Box

Here we present an antique Poultney & Trimble Smith’s Patent Percussion Saddle Ring Carbine, made circa 1863 by the American Machine Works in Springfield, Massachusetts with a production run between 1861 and 1865. Reportedly, about 30,362 of these carbines were purchased by the U.S. Government throughout the Civil War. Some of these carbines were issued to the 3rd West Virginia Cavalry, who served as part of Geroge Armstrong Custer’s 3rd Division and played a pivotal role in the Battle of Moorefield in 1864. Most of these were made and almost all of them were used in the Union cavalry during the American Civil War. The designer was Dr. Gilbert Smith of Buttermilk Falls, New York.

Along with American Machine Works, Massachusetts Arms Co. and the American Arms Company also manufactured the Smith Carbine between 1861-1865. Smith’s design was one of the more popular cavalry carbines during the war as his design featured a simple break open action, providing a single shot, utilizing a cartridge made of rubber. While many different cartridges were in use simultaneously during the war, which must have been a logistical nightmare, the rubber cartridge was both a nuisance to the shooter who had to get the hot gummy thing out of the chamber once fired, as well as to the ammunition manufacturer, who had to acquire rubber from distant places. In place of rubber, many other materials were also tried.

According to Flayderman, the Smith Carbine was known to have been utilized in number by the 3rd West Virginia, 7th and 11th Illinois, 1st Connecticut, 7th and 17th Pennsylvania, 6th and 9th Ohio, and 1st Massachusetts Cavalries.

The left side of the lock plate is marked “MANUFACTURED BY / AM’N.N’CH’N.WKS. / SPRINGFIELD. MASS.” And “ADDRESS / POULTNEY & TRIMBLE. / BALTIMORE. U.S.A.”

The over condition is good. Patina throughout. The action is excellent. The bore is bright with strong rifling. Front sight is a replacement. The stock shows a good cartouche on the left side of the wrist. The stock shows use, there is a stable split on the bottom right side of the wrist about 5 inches in length.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 21-5/8 inches.

Caliber: .50 Percussion

Overall condition as seen in photos.
