CIVIL WAR Antique NORRIS & CLEMENT Model 1861 Infantry Rifle-MUSKET .58 Cal
Primary Infantry Weapon of the Union
Here we present an antique S. Norris & W.T. Clement US Model 1861 Civil War Rifle-Musket, made circa 1864 in Springfield, Massachusetts. The M1861 was the primary musket at the start of the American Civil War. The musket was designed to fire the .58 caliber minie ball. Springfield Armory supervised the manufacturing and distribution of the Model 1861 muskets. In order to fulfill shortages, production was subcontracted to several private manufactures. This particular contract was issued for the State of Massachusetts as a Regulation 1861 contract. Norris & Clement manufactured 11,000 muskets in 1863 and 1864 and incorporated the improvements of the Model 1863 system.
The lock is marked “S.N.&W.T.C./FOR/MASSACHUSETTS” and dated “1864” on the tail of the lock along “U.S.” under “Eagle”. “VP” eagle head proofs on the left side of the barrel. The letters “I.O.” are punched into the wood on the left side of the stock towards the butt.
The overall condition is Good. The action is excellent. The bore is clean with nice rifling. The markings are clear. The walnut stock shows some handling marks and there is a small loss between the hammer and the barrel tang that looks very old and patinaed. This one looks just as it should having just come out of the attic. A neat piece of Civil War history that will look great on display above the mantle or in any collection!
