CIVIL WAR Antique Model 1850 Staff & Field OFFICER’S Sword
With ETCHED BLADE and BRASS HILT
Here we present an antique U.S. Model 1850 Staff and Officer’s Style Sword, made circa the 1850s. The Model 1850 had a service life of 1850-72, with the climax of the action being the American Civil War, followed by the Indian Wars. This example features a 31-1/4 inch, etched blade with roughly two-thirds coverage and an overall length of 37-1/2 inches. Though we have no documentation with the sword, we were told that it is attributed as a Confederate field office’s sword.
The Model 1850 Army Staff and Field Officer’s Sword was carried by all members of staff departments, Field Grade officers of Artillery and Infantry, Company Grade Officers of Light Artillery, Staff Officers and Aides-de-Camp between 1850 and 1872. It was based on a French pattern. Though other swords were allowed by the regulations, this model was by far the most popular sword carried by officers during the American Civil War. During the years before the war, many Confederate officers, including General Robert E. Lee carried this sword in the Indian campaigns. Although intended for officers of the rank of major and above, since swords were items of private purchase and not government issue, there was nothing to stop officers of any rank from owning one.
The overall condition is good. The blade finish has matured to a dark patina. A large ding is present on the blade and although worn, etchings are present. The twisted brass grip wire is missing. Some movement can be felt when handling the hand guard and pommel. No scabbard.
