CIVIL WAR Antique Belgian J.J. GERARD .58 Percussion RIFLE-MUSKET
.58 Caliber Imported by both NORTH & SOUTH
Here we present an antique J.J. Gerard Rifle-Musket, manufactured circa the early 1860s in Liege, Belgium. This example of one of the tens of thousands of European muskets and rifles imported to arm early war volunteers on both sides in the American Civil War. Lock is marked J.J. Gerard Liege in two lines. There are numerous Liege proofs and an adjustable ladder type rear sight. This is a very high quality .58 caliber rifle!
There were many muskets purchased by the Union agent Hartley throughout Europe. This weapon was imported in large quantities and was issued, and disliked, by thousands of Union infantrymen. Imported arms played a key role in the early years of the war before the U.S. armories and contractors could catch up in production. Some estimates of imported French and Belgian arms place their numbers close to 150,000 examples.
The overall condition is fine. Armory bright finish. The action is excellent. The bore is bright with sharp rifling. The stock is smooth and solid throughout. Inspection markings are clear throughout on both wood and metal.
