CASED, ENGRAVED Northeastern Long Rifle by MITCHELL Takedown German Silver
Fantastic Cased Set with Bullet Mold, Powder Flask & More!
Here we present an antique New York Half Stock Target Rifle, made circa the 1850s.
This intriguing rifle has German styling with a short overall length and a pistol-grip trigger guard. A signed example that we have had in the past featured a full-length, military-style stock, however, this example is more refined and meant for hunting or shooting competitions such as took place with the Turner clubs. Peep sights make this a great precision shooter. Aesthetically, it features a distinctive full-bodied and curvaceous stock with a half-length fore end and a half octagonal half round barrel. There wonderful German silver escutcheons mounted in the right and left sides of the butt stock: the one on the left a stag. The stock has nice grain that remains understated with the dark finish. The barrel is heavy, partially round and partially octagonal, making this an overall sold rifle.
The brass bullet mold is .40 caliber and made for ball or conical. Comes with a large powder flask, and powder measure. The case itself is very nice and solid. Hook system closes the case. The left hook is broken but the right is still solid.
The overall condition is Very Good. The action is as strong as ever! The bore is in great condition. The lock is engraved “MITCHELL/WARRANTED” and is clear. Minor repair to the stock just forward of the lock. A hefty rifle that would have been trusted to get the job done, then and now! A fine addition to any collection or display!
Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
Barrel is 30-5/8 inches.
Overall condition as seen in photos.
