CASED & ENGRAVED Antique Civil War SMITH & WESSON No. 1 2nd Issue REVOLVER
GOLD AND SILVER PLATED
Here we present an antique Cased, Engraved, Silver and Gold Plated Smith & Wesson Model No. 1, Second Issue Revolver, manufactured circa 1860 to 1868 in Springfield, Massachusetts. The case lid’s initial placard is marked with the initials “NBG”. Smith & Wesson manufactured approximately 115,000 of these revolvers between 1860 and 1868. Serial numbers started around 11000 where the 1st Issue left off and continued to 126400. The No. 1 was Smith & Wesson’s first metallic cartridge firearm. It utilized the idea of the “bored through cylinder”, which was patented by Rollin White and subsequently exclusively licensed by Smith & Wesson.
The overall condition is fine. Original silver and gold finish over engraved surfaces. The markings are clear. The action is excellent. The cylinder indexes and locks up well. The bore is clean and reflective with strong rifling. The ivory grips are in fine shape. The fitted, red felt-lined case is in very good condition and comes with a key. A fantastic set!
