CARVED & GOLD Painted Antique EUROPEAN Full Stock Conversion SPORTING Gun
Late 1700s to Early 1800s PERCUSSION CONVERSION
Here we present an antique Carved European Full Stock Percussion Sporting Gun, made circa the late 18th Century to the early 19th Century. This gun would have started out life as a flintlock and converted sometime after the new percussion firing system was introduced. Its smoothbore stout octagonal barrel is in approximately 20 gauge, made primarily as a small game gun or to defend the homestead against unwanted aggression.
In the earlier years of the United States, a shotgun such as this would have been a necessary tool to have in all households and possibly brought over by someone starting a new life in the new nation of the United States. A shotgun like this would have been hanging over every fireplace in frontier American, and necessary to have if you wanted to eat, along with protection when ne’er do wells came around. This would have been primarily a firearm designed for hunting both big and small game, along with a bird or two sitting on the pond.
The overall condition is very good. Strong action. Original brown patina. The bore is in good shape for its age and remains smooth. This example sports a distinct carved and solid stock with average and expected handling wear. The wooden trigger guard is intact!
