Product Description

CARVED, ENGRAVED Antique FRENCH Double Barrel PERCUSSION Shotgun by PEYRON

High-End, Gorgeous St. Etienne

Here we present an antique Engraved, Relief Carved French Double Barrel Percussion Side by Side Shotgun, made by J. B. Peyron Pere & Fils in St. Etienne, France. The Peyron family was a multi-generational firearms-making family active from as far back as the 18th Century and even into the 20th.

The highlight of this piece is the stock. Not only is it masterfully carved and checkered, but it is simply a beautiful piece of select wood. The grain is wavy and alternates with light and dark color in a brindle fashion. In 19th Century French fashion the pistol grip curves gently downward and the comb and cheekpiece sweep up to overlap. Behind the cheek piece is one of the incised scenes; this one is of a maned lion sinking its teeth into an antelope. The pistol grip morphs into a rather Roman masculine face. Both the pistol grip and the forestock have a basket-weave style of hand-checkering.

The metal parts of this shotgun are ornate as well. Each lock has a highly arched hammer with curly spur and lion’s head terminus. The engraving on the front of each lock features a sea serpent. The makers’ name is spelled out in gold and is “J.B Peyron Pere & Fils (father and sons) St. Etienne”. The barrels have a Damascene twist. The butt plate is engraved with a flourish of scroll on the tang and a simple border on the sides. The trigger guard has a panel of a beast’s face on the flat and a bird on the finial. The rear of each lock, breech of the barrel, and the barrel tang are also engraved. There are both front and rear sling swivels.

The overall condition is near fine. Crisp actions. The bores are clean and smooth. The stock is solid. The forestock has been grafted and matched feature for feature. Only the change in grain and color give it away, and only if you look closely. This is a wonderful piece and similar in quality to some of the works of Le Page and Boutet.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrels are 35-1/2 inches.

Bores are approximately .686” (left) and .689” (right)

Overall condition as seen in photos.
