CARVED & ENGRAVED Antique FLINTLOCK .55 Carbine
With Colonial Style Deep Relief Engraving on Barrel
Here we present an antique Carved & Engraved Flintlock Carbine, made circa the early-19th Century, likely in a European colony. This small, single shot carbine is about the size of a contemporaneous horse pistol, fitted with a shoulder stock. The stock is carved with modest scrolls and, instead of a metal butt plate, one is carved into the back. The ramrod is tipped in ebony and the stock in horn. The overall style of the pistol is European, however, the deep relief engraving on the top of the breech end of the barrel has clear Native influence: a kind of grotesque monster covered in feathers. A large crown is located under that with the letters “CA” under that. This carbine would have been a handy weapon for someone on horseback.
The overall condition is good. The metal surfaces bear a light gray patina. The markings are clear. The stock is in great shape. The bore is smooth and dusty. The action on this carbine is strong.
