c1910 mfr. WINCHESTER Model 1892 Lever Action TAKEDOWN RIFLE .25-20 WCF C&R
Octagonal Barrel, Crescent Butt Plate
Here we present a C&R Winchester Model 1892 Lever Action Takedown Rifle chambered in .25-20 WCF, made in 1910 in New Haven, Connecticut. Another fantastic design from the mind of John Moses Browning, the 1892 was made to replace the venerable and iconic 1873 and featured its pistol caliber chamberings. The result was a trim and light rifle that was an immediate hit and stayed in production from1892 through 1938 and produced upwards to 1,000,000 rifles. Carbines such as this one continued production through 1941. The Model 1892 was first chambered in .44-40 cartridges, and in 1895 the 25-20 emerged.
The Model 1892, like many other Winchester rifles, were popular when the television show “The Rifleman” premiered in 1958 starring Chuck Connors and producers tried to find gimmicks to distinguish one show from another. The Rifleman’s gimmick was a modified Winchester Model 1892 rifle, with a large ring lever drilled and tapped for a set screw. The lever design allowed him to cock the rifle by spinning it around his hand. In addition, the screw could be positioned to depress the trigger every time he worked the lever, allowing for rapid fire, emptying the magazine in under five seconds during the opening credits.
The overall condition is very good+. Original blue finish with light oxidation and some remnants of case colors on the lever. The action is excellent. The bore is shiny bright with sharp rifling. The stock is solid; there is a small square graft/inlay on the right side of the wrist.
